Did you know there are seven dairy breed recognized in North America? Seven different kinds of foster mothers of the human race! I will be starting a new series where I discuss one of the seven dairy breeds. Today, I’m going to begin with my favorite breed, the Jersey.
The Jersey is my favorite breed and the breed I am most involved in. However, I do have another breed on my family farm. There are many unique things about the Jersey breed. First of all, they are the smallest breed, typically being 850 pounds, rather than the average 1200 that other breeds average at.
The Jersey rarely has spots and her colors can range from a very light tan to an almost black color. The Jersey also has the highest butter fat and protein in her milk, which is why her milk makes such great cheese. The Jersey tends to have a spunky and curious personality which makes her very endearing.
For more information on the Jersey breed check out the American Jersey Cattle Association . If you want to see more pictures of them, continue to check out my blog!
