Back to my weekly post about a dairy breed. This week I am going to teach you about Red and Whites. Red and Whites are one of the newest breeds to be added to the official list of North American dairy cattle. The breed association became known as the Red and White Dairy Cattle Association in 1964.
When registering a Red and White animal, the most important criteria is that the he or she must be red and white or have a red factor. For those of you that don’t know what red factor is, in order to have a red and white cow she must get both genes for the red hair coat. If a cow only has one red gene and is black and white on the outside she is said to have a red factor.
Red and Whites are very unique being that they can be purebred of any breed other than Jerseys and Brown Swiss. The trick is they have to have the Red and White coat. The list includes Holsteins and several breeds I will talk about in the future. Red and and White show at World Dairy Expo is one of the faster growing shows and the breed is becoming larger and larger every day.
