A few weeks ago I told you that my mom grew up in town, which is totally true. However, when you live in a rural area it’s hard to get too far away from farming. My grandfather was the mayor of our small town, but along with his brothers and other family members owned Longuski Silo. They put silos up all across our local area. They even put one up on our family farm once upon a time!
This past weekend there was a 150th family reunion for the Maurer Family Farms, you can read more about it here. All around the farm they had signs on distinct parts of the farm and on the silo there was this sign.
These silos are called upright silos and they were used for animal feed storage back in the early 1900s. Although some farmers still use them, many have quit because they tend to be a lot of maintenance and can be dangerous for the people using them. On our family farm we have one silo still standing but isn’t being used for feed.
One of my favorite past times is finding a silo that my family put up and taking pictures of it. Hopefully I’ll be able to find the oldest silo and get some photographs of it! I love finding the evidence of my family’s work and find it amazing that 60 years after construction they’re still standing.

Loved it, very cool. Loved the walk down memory lane thinking of all the times we took messags for farmers who called to have a silo built and also when they came for cement bags or parts and we had to help them. Thanks.
