This is the first post for my question series. Thank you for all of the questions I’ve received so far, and if you have something to ask don’t be afraid to get into contact with me! The question I’m answering is this:
How many acres do you farm and what crops?
Many of you may not know that on our family farm we do much more than just cows! Which is part of the reason I don’t get on here much anymore. In addition to taking care of our animals, we also raise crops. The most important of them are the ones we feed our cows. We raise corn, hay and grasses for the cows.
In addition to the feed we also grow some crops for sale. We grow several crops that are called “cash crops”. They are crops grown to be sold into market. Our family grows three other crops; corn, wheat and dry edible beans. I’ve discussed dry beans before, if you want to you can read one of my posts here or get more information at the Michigan Bean Commission.
We plant what is called winter wheat. The wheat is planted in the fall and it is given a chance to get sprouted before winter comes. The plant goes into a hibernation for the winter and then continues growing in the spring. We then harvest the wheat and use the stalk for bedding and feed. When spring comes I will share more about our wheat and corn when we begin planting!
