Spring always brings a rush of activity into our lives. The days are getting longer, there is work outside the home, and our social lives always seem to pick up. This pick up in activity all happens on the farm! We also seem to get busier this time of the year. We have a lot of building changes going on this spring and summer.
Earlier this spring we started tearing out our old parlor. After all, we don’t need it now that we have the robots to milk the cows. We added in a larger milk tank and have begun remodeling in the barn to make a better environment for our cows.
We are adding in a new pen for our dry cows. For those of you who don’t know what dry cows are, before a cow has a calf we do what we call dry her up. We basically stop her from milking for about 2 months and put her in a separate pen. Until she has her calf she does not get milked. All she does is eat, drink and lay around with her friends. On our farm we call it her vacation!
These new free stalls are going to be a new pen for our dry cows. Moving the cows here will be wonderful because we can keep a better eye on them. It will be closer to where the robots are and in case of an emergency they are much closer. Hopefully by Friday we will have our cows mosey around the pen.
