Editor’s Note: Today we are continuing with our Agriculture is Everywhere series. My friend Taysha is the amazing woman behind Dirt Road Charm! If you don’t follow her blog you need to, she is funny and informative and all around a great person. I would know from experience because we managed to not listen to any chemistry lectures in college.
Ag is everywhere….
That is no lie! I mean you can almost connect everything back to Ag in some way shape or form……disclaimer: I said almost everything so don’t spend the next 10 minutes trying to prove me wrong.
How do I connect to Ag you ask? Well I am lucky enough to work as a District Sales Manager for Monsanto’s Stewart Seed brand. I get to connect with Ag everyday by working with farmers to create a crop that will then make tons of products that you the consumer may eat. How does that relate to you? Well let me tell ya!
I sell seed such as corn, soybeans, wheat, and alfalfa to farmers in a territory. Many of the farmers grow corn and soybeans that are then fed to livestock such as pigs, cattle, and chickens that you then consume as delicious steak, bacon, or chicken nuggets. Some farmers also grow food grade corn that becomes tortilla chips, corn flour, etc.
Much of the wheat that is grown in my area goes to Kraft foods. Yes the iconic mac n cheese as well as crackers, bread, and tons of other foods! So if you consume any of those grains you get tied back to agriculture.
Prior to this job I worked for ABS Global as a sales manager selling bull semen and inseminating cows. Again….how does this relate to you? Well we would help producers select bulls that would give the calves a genetic advantage. So for a dairy herd many producers would select traits such as longevity……they want those calves to be able to stay in the herd a long time and be healthy! Also milk production is very important because that directly relates to you the consumer (for those of you that drink milk!)
Now for a beef herd we select traits more on a carcass level. We want bulls that will make great muscling and marbling (the fat) to make the perfect steak! And speaking of steak who else is completely excited that grilling season is underway after that insanely long winter?!
Not only do cattle supply delicious meat and milk the byproducts also make a ton of products that you may be surprised by!
So while you may not directly live on a farm or work in the Ag industry you more than likely are tied to it in some way just by the food that you eat or the products that you use!
Enjoy!
