On our farm, we love technology. We all have iPhones (even my Dad has upgraded to an iPhone), I love social media and try to stay up on the latest developments and programs. You know we have robots to milk our cows which is some of the latest technology in dairy farming. Now, our robot technology has gotten even more advanced and fun!
Our robots now have apps. After all, there is an app for everything… Including checking on my cows. Let me tell you, they are SO COOL!
I have a menu just like every other app out there. It can take me to any thing else I want to see. On the search tab I can go to any cow’s information I want. It is quite handy and user friendly.
This is a cow page. Of course I decided to check out Bambi on that day! I can see everything that is current about her and I can input any treatment, dry off, calving, insemination, etcetera right there!
I can also look and see what the herd’s current average is at any moment. To check this I used to use a program where I logged in and remotely controlled my computer. Now I can just check in on the app and see it all! Pretty cool stuff.
I can check the calving page and it will show me who is expected to calve and when their due date is. I can also put it into the computer from my app. I love this because sometimes I forget to put the cow into the computer and then I have to run into my office. No need to anymore.
Also, I can log in and see any cows that are in heat and receptive to being bred. Talk about convenient. There are a decent amount of cow related apps for smart phones today. I truly feel like this is the most advanced and user friendly one I have used. I love the fact that I can input data into the app where as a lot of them will just let you look up information about a cow or group.
The only problem is that it is really heavy and each menu selection opens up another small app. I hope that eventually Lely will be able to get it down to one decent sized app. That way I don’t have to be connected to wifi to get use it without running my data bill up.
