Spring is one of my favorite times of the year. It is so nice to be able to get outside without all of the extra gear on. But spring is not just about wearing fewer layers to work. There is so much more to spring on the farm.
Opening curtains. This sounds simple, but the bitter winter winds in Michigan can really beat these puppies up. This usually means there is some fixing that goes along with it. Opening the curtains is a happy day for cows and humans alike. It means the days are getting warmer and sunnier. The cows now have their green, gorgeous view back! The barn protects them in the winter from the elements and it keeps them cool in the coming hot months while still allowing them access to the sun.
Cleaning up. Everything gets winterized. The tractors, the barns and even the robots. This means that everything gets a good spring cleaning. I have the robots all cleaned up from winter already. Around the farm things get cleaned up too. Just like you spring clean your house, we spring clean the farm. We want it to look its best because we are proud of it and let’s face it, sometimes things hide in the snow.
Planting and fieldwork. When warm weather comes and everything starts to dry out, along comes fieldwork and planting. Farmers are getting started or possibly finishing in the fields and #Plant15. When planting starts we know summer is almost here and that means lots and lots of fun! We actually just finished planting all of our crops this past weekend. We are thrilled that we were able to get it done so efficiently but the weather cooperated beautifully and now we are hoping for some rain. That will be the icing on the cake because it will help the seeds sprout and begin to grow perfectly!
