- 1 cup ketchup
- 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
- 2/3 cup brown sugar packed
- 1/3 Tablespoon black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon cayenne (optional)
- 3 Tablespoons lemon juice
- 1 Tablespoon honey
- Mix all of the ingredients except for the ketchup until the sugar is dissolved. Add the ketchup and bring to a simmer. Cook for about 20 minutes. It is ready to be used then, or you can use it as a marinade.
- You can change this recipe until it is to your taste! That's what I did compared to the regular recipe. It was a little too tangy for my taste so I added more sugar and added in the honey.
I am from Michigan. I do not understand the art of BBQ. But I will say, I enjoy eating it. A. LOT. When it came time to plan a family dinner for my husband’s birthday I decided I wanted to do something on the grill. It is easy, delicious and makes for less cleaning in the house. For me, my first thought was to make BBQed chicken. It was simple, easy to make for a lot of people and relatively inexpensive. When I was in Chicago in March I had some Memphis Style BBQ Sauce on chicken and it was so yummy. I just love sweet yet tangy notes in a Memphis BBQ sauce.
After lots of research on what makes this type of BBQ sauce what it is, I came up with a recipe that I decided to try. Not to spoil the end of the story, but the chicken was delish and you should probably make it. For the meal as a whole, my mother-in-law made her famous and delicious baked bean recipe. I made Ree Drummond’s Potato Salad and my mom made my husband’s favorite 5 Layer Dessert. I’m sure I will share the rest of the recipes eventually, but for now I am sharing my chicken recipe.
We had another family get together earlier in the day so I prepped the chicken the night before. Honestly, I would probably do that again because it was so easy. I bought a family back of chicken thighs and a family pack of drumsticks. I put them in my trusty freezer bag with some sauce, smushed them around and threw them in the fridge for the night. Without any further ado, my recipe.
