Now that fall is here, it is getting dark a lot sooner. With running becoming a very popular form of fitness, we often forget that safety is something we need to teach. This summer we had this tragedy in our area, I just knew I needed to share what I know. If it can save another person’s life or it can save another driver the guilt that happened in this situation, I wanted to do it.
Wear light or bright colored clothing, even better wear reflective clothing. What you wear is so important! It helps make it easier to be seen. I’m notorious of always buying black workout gear. It makes you look slimmer right? Then I go to run in the dusk and I kick myself. So, I’m buying cold weather running gear and I’m making myself buy anything other than black or navy.
Buy a running belt or running light. My husband bought this belt for us. He always finds the greatest running and fitness gear. This belt is reflective and it has a light that can glow or blink. When I got out at dusk I always wear this belt. It’s light and it helps me to feel safer running in the early morning or evening.
I always have my phone with me in case of emergency. I fully realize if I get hit by a car I probably won’t be able to call anyone. However, as a woman I need to be conscious of people and situations that might be unsafe. My phone is always in my Flipbelt and ready to go.
Don’t forget, always run AGAINST traffic. You always need to run so that you can see the cars coming at you. That way, if someone doesn’t see you you can get the heck out of the way.
When you can, try to run on less busy roads or sidewalks. I fully realize this isn’t always possible. But I enourage runners to try and run in less busy areas.
What are are some of your tips for keeping yourself safe while running or exercising outside?

The media thought they could select our next Presidend by their biased writings. Thank goodness the American voter had the last word and the beliefs in our freedom still prevailed. Regardless of your vote let the healing begin and let us support our new leadership for the good of America which is the greatest country in the world.
