The past couple weeks I have been pretty quiet. I apologize and there is a reason. We were actually busy getting ready to host a group of local young farmers. Our local Farm Bureau asked us if we would like to host an open house this summer. Naturally, we said yes because we are crazy and never say no to things like this. So, the planning for Friday Night on the Farm began. The past few weeks have included a lot of cleaning up around the farm. Taking care of the weed jungle that sprouted up during all the rain… Read More
I Have an Identity Issue
I think this is how Stay at Home Mothers and Fathers feel. I have been told by many a stay at home parent and just as much by a working parent that you get so wrapped up in taking care of your kids and your job that you forget to be who you were before you had kids. No, that isn’t the right wording. Maybe the best way to say it is you forget to bring a piece of who you were before you had kids with you. You love your kids, but there is someone more than just the… Read More
I Believe in Country Music Again
I grew up in a household where we listened to Classic Rock or ’80s and ’90s Country. Which means I was listening to Country before it was cool. When Country started to become popular is when it started to stray from my taste. Since then I have had a hard time liking a lot of Country music. I still like certain artists like my “boyfriend” Eric Church and my lady crush Miranda Lambert. There were a lot of artists that started out being original and fell into doing the popular thing. Or maybe they became popular with absolutely no talent…. Read More
Memphis Style BBQ Chicken
I am from Michigan. I do not understand the art of BBQ. But I will say, I enjoy eating it. A. LOT. When it came time to plan a family dinner for my husband’s birthday I decided I wanted to do something on the grill. It is easy, delicious and makes for less cleaning in the house. For me, my first thought was to make BBQed chicken. It was simple, easy to make for a lot of people and relatively inexpensive. When I was in Chicago in March I had some Memphis Style BBQ Sauce on chicken and it was… Read More
What is haylage? Harvest 2015
After the holiday weekend I decided to take a big break from blogging. OK, I’ll be straight. I was lazy and didn’t feel like blogging. For the record, my house duties got neglected too so needless to say, I have a lot to catch up on this week. On my Facebook page I promised I would talk about harvesting haylage. After I shared a picture of all of the equipment I had two people say they would be interested in reading about how we make haylage. So that means 6 of you will actually be interested in this. For the… Read More

When did Profit Become a 4-Letter Word
So many of you (our consumers) love farmers. You read our blogs, like our pictures and eat and wear our products every single day. We, the farmers, love you for that. Over the years, however, I’ve noticed your perspective of us has changed. Somewhere along the way “profit” became a 4-letter word when it comes to farming. There are a lot of people that believe people producing food should not make a profit. Farmers, like myself, need to support their families . And frankly, if we never made money we would have other jobs. On average, the farmer only receives… Read More
Blueberry Crisp
Being from Michigan we have a huge Blueberry industry. Blueberries are actually native to Michigan and in 2012 we harvested 19,700 acres of blueberries! That means Michigan produced 87 million pounds of blueberries with 49 million pounds of those going into the fresh market. All of those blueberries make Michigan the top producer of blueberries followed by Oregon, Washington, Georgia, New Jersey, California, North Carolina, Florida, Mississippi and Indiana. These 10 states comprise 98% of the nation’s blueberry production even though 38 states produce blueberries. Now that you know more about blueberries, I am going to share with you one… Read More
