When it was Earth Day, I posted that farms recycle everyday. When I said that I wasn’t pulling your leg! I plan to prove it today. When we milk cows, the milk is cooled two ways before it is loaded on the truck to go to the plant. One of the ways we do this is with a plate cooler.
A Long Awaited Update
I was informed by some of my loyal readers at Thumb Veterinary Service that I forgot to give everyone an update on Bambi after she calved. I apologize for giving everyone the big buildup and then a HUGE let down. So, thank you ladies for reminding me! I am happy to report that Bambi is doing wonderful! She is in lactation and happy as a clam. I’m not sure how happy a clam is, or how you know a clam is happy, but it sounded like an appropriate analogy. Now, I’m starting to regret using it. But I digress, back… Read More
Food Animals
I read this post from a fellow blogging friend, Crystal Cattle, and I totally fell in love with it and had to share it. Miranda Lambert and Blake Shelton have always been two of my favorite country singers and this quote from her only gives me another reason to love them more! Enjoy and thanks to Crystal Cattle, check out her Facebook Fan Page and on Twitter. Food Animals Food Animals vs. Pets – there is a difference Miranda Lambert has done a nice job of explaining the difference between food animals and pets. Miranda Lambert is not only a superstar… Read More
Borrowed Time
I’ve been told many times that it seems farmers only care about ourselves and making money from our farms and our animals. I would argue that we are very conscious of the future generation. A fellow young dairy farmer told me, “The land we farm isn’t ours, we’re simply borrowing it from the next generation.”

Everyday is Earth Day for Farmers
In honor of Earth Day I felt I should show how dairy farmers take care of the environment everyday! On my family’s farm we recycle water used in our parlor to cool the milk by putting it into waterers for the cows. We spread our cow’s manure onto our fields as a natural fertilizer. My family is diligent to make sure we spread the manure when weather is sunny and away from any type of waterway or ditch. We only spread the amount of manure we need and we plow it into the field very shortly after we apply it. We… Read More
Foodie Friday: Chili: Delicious and Versatile
Chili: Versatile and Delicious During college I discovered my love for cooking and lucky for me, I got to try my recipes out on my friends. I rarely cooked for just myself; when I cooked a meal I often fed at least 4 others. So leftovers weren’t an issue. When I was living alone, I still loved to cook, and that caused a major issue. What to do with the food left in the fridge after a few days? Now, the freezer has become my best friend. When I cook something for myself I plan to freeze at least half… Read More
Animal Abuse: Still a Big No No!
We are all going to run across a new video of animal abuse from one of the animal rights groups. To be honest, this abuse is uncalled for and I find it disturbing that in today’s world it is still happening. I found a wonderful post written by a fellow dairy farmer this morning. I feel like this post sums up everything that I feel so I’m going to share it with you, rather than writing another one.
